Dental Sealants
When your child is first beginning their oral care routine, you might be wondering how you can help them in the best way possible. Whether you want to be extra cautious or your child is dealing with tooth decay, we can apply a quick layer of dental sealant to their most vulnerable teeth. This composite resin material seals teeth (typically molars and premolars) away from debris and bacteria once cured, making it easier for younger patients to brush and floss.
Fluoride Treatment
One of the most important minerals for oral health is fluoride because of how it works to protect and strengthen tooth enamel. While fluoride can be found in public drinking water, certain foods, and in the oral care products you provide your child, it’s also available in our office! The only difference is our fluoride therapy is much stronger and designed to last longer than what you find over the counter. We generally perform fluoride therapy once every six to twelve months depending on your child’s needs.
Nightguards for Bruxism
While adults are known for grinding and clenching their teeth, children are susceptible to this condition as well. However, the implications are even more concerning since their teeth are still in the development phase. To protect their baby and permanent teeth from chronic teeth grinding (also called bruxism), our office can create a customized oral appliance that is worn as they sleep. With regular use, you can help them avoid breakdown of their enamel and jaw discomfort, two symptoms that typically occur due to bruxism.
At-Home Dental Hygiene Products
Finding a set of oral care products that your child will use is just as important as helping them use those products. If they don’t enjoy using their toothbrush, toothpaste, or floss, it’s going to make routine dental care far more difficult. All About Kids Dentistry is happy to help parents find a product their child enjoys. We currently recommend ACT mouthwash, Colgate Kids toothpaste, Tom’s toothpaste for those with dental sensitivity, and other fluoridated toothpastes based on their preference.
Non-Nutritive Habits
At a young age, it’s considered normal for a child to rely on certain habits to help them relax. This may include thumb-sucking, digit-sucking, or using a pacifier. However, if they are still performing these habits at or above the age of four years old, it can start to negatively affect their development. Don’t worry, our team is highly trained to help children break these habits, protecting your child’s smile and its growth. This may include motivating them with positive incentives to avoid digit-sucking and other techniques.
Gum Disease Treatment
Your child’s teeth matter, but they are not the only aspects of their oral heath you’ll need to consider. Their gums are also important for keeping their teeth protected and in place. In fact, chronic gingivitis is more common in children than you’d initially think. During your visit, we’ll discuss the risk factors that can make gum disease more likely, how you can best prevent gum disease in your child, and personalized treatments to address gum disease if it’s already present.
